BOLD’s Red Tent Event
A red tent…mothers voices…intimacy…truth. After BOLD New York's hugely
successful red tent event in 2006 we thought:why not have BOLD Red
Tent events around the world throughout the year? BOLD's Red Tent event
concept is simple: gather women under a "red tent" to listen to mothers'
birth stories and then record their stories (in film, written word
or visual expression) as part of our BOLD
Library of Birth Truths. A BOLD Red Tent event is an excellent
opportunity for communities throughout the world to be BOLD any time
of the year and showcase your community's local birth stories.

- You can perform a BOLD Red Tent event any time throughout
the year and without producing a BOLD performance of Birth.
- BOLD Red Tent events have two options. The first
option is a women-only event where you invite women of all ages to
gather under a "red tent" anytime throughout the year and ask the
mothers to tell their birth stories. The second option is to spend
4 weeks with 5-10 mothers in your community (who represent the typical
birth stories in your area) and ask them to write their birth stories..
After these 4 weeks the mothers will rehearse their stories so they
can be presented as a fundraising performance to a local audience
in an intimate "red tent" space (The actual women could perform their
own stories or you could ask local actors to perform the stories
for the performance).
- All BOLD Red Tent events must contribute to the BOLD Library
of Truth. BOLD Red Tent organizers must commit to recording
their event or their community's birth stories
either by video, the written word or visual art. Their artistic
piece will become a part of the BOLD Library of Birth Truths.
- What
do we mean by creating a "BOLD red tent?" Our
intention is that each BOLD Red Tent event will be an intimate,
safe space for mothers to support each other to share birth stories
and after the event that each BOLD Red Tent will take action
by recording their community's birth stories for the BOLD Library
of Birth Truths. At BOLD we feel anyone can gather women to tell
birth stories…our BOLD Red Tents take the extra step of
artistically educating the world about how mothers are giving
birth today – through their eyes.
- All BOLD Red Tent events are fundraisers. Not
every BOLD Red Tent will charge money for their event, but for those
that do all proceeds from BOLD Red Tent events must go to organizations
or small groups who are working to make maternity care mother-friendly.
(up to 25% of the profits may be used to repay the BOLD Red Tent
organizer's expenses).
- BOLD is an online community. All of BOLD's correspondence
is done online and therefore to participate you must be able to commit
to checking your email frequently for communication updates from
BOLD.
