BOLD Locations

Wilmington, North Carolina

So many wonderful memories from working on this play!

Our cast was made up of five professional actresses and three birth professionals (one CPM, one doula, one apprenticing CPM); broken down another way - four mommies, four non-mommies. Everyone was learning from everyone else about acting and about childbirth.

Opening night was absolutely electric! I cried, and I'd seen the play many, many times before.! The run of the show went way too quickly. The most amazing thing was watching the talk back panel engaging the audience after each show. I really feel like we opened up a dialogue amoungst the birth professionals and the "consumers" in our community. We were lucky enough to have the OB who works in the clinic and trains the residents at our local hospital attend two of our shows and sit on the panel. He and his wife had a homebirth with the Certified Professional Midwife in our cast! He was very frank about the high c-section/intervention rate and said that until consumers demanded to be treated better, things will continue as they are because "it's all about the bottom line."

Also, we held a BOLD Red Tent Event and it has "birthed" a monthly Birth Circle! The Cape Fear Area Doulas, one of the organizations to which we donated our funds, has hosted four Birth Circles and has started a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) support group as well.

Kirsti Kreutzer was the BOLD Organizer in Wilmington. BOLD Wilmington raised money for Cape Fear Area Doulas and North Carolina Friends of Midwives.
