BOLD Locations

Maui, Hawaii

BOLD organizer Robin Garrison writes:

When I saw Vagina Monologues, I loved it.  I said to myself, if those women can sit on stage and read from a script and have a successful stage show, there MUST be something I can do ... so, here you have it.  When "Birth” became available for performances, I jumped right on it.

On September 3, as part of BOLD 2006, with the assistance of a fabulous videographer, we filmed a version of "Birth.” It is the "Vagina Monologues on Birth" and it is fabulous. I played all 7 characters and stretched my limits to the fullest ... being in labor 7 times, the tears, the labor pains, the funny stories were all very real.  It was sooooo much  fun

I decided to perform each part in front of a camera so I could send it to the playwright, Karen Brody, to let her know that on Maui, we are serious about Birth and want  to perform the play.  I got so deeply inspired after this ... it was amazing to me that tears came so easily each time the script called for tears ... birth sounds came like I was just in labor yesterday ... a bit of each birth I attended came to me. I so looooove being involved in Birth.

After the Sunday performance,  the visions came very clear to me. My dream is this ... next September (Women's Health Month), there will be a Dinner Theater for the 5 Saturdays in September.  Each night, there will be a different Ethnic meal (Ethiopian, Jamaican, Indian, Hawaiian, West Indian (Guyanese). The show may be performed at 5:00 p.m. and the Dinner may start at 6:30.  It should be a blast.

Rehearsals for BOLD 2007 will start this month with a DVD showing of the performance and discussion.  Each actor will rehearse with me every 2 weeks. When everyone has their individual parts together we will get together and try it as a "tribe".

This is basically a commitment for the next year. I look forward to hanging out with a tribe of fabulous women on a regular basis!

Robin adds:

I am in the process of forming "Women Who Care," a non-profit.  The dream is that after paying for the venue, videographer, advertising, and actors, the rest will go into a "Women Who Care" fund.  This will help make home birth available for women who could not other wise afford it or help a woman get necessary medical help who doesn't have insurance, etc. I'm hoping that a significant amount will be raised. Tickets will hopefully go on sale at least 6 months before the event so if people are coming from the mainland they can make plans. So, everyone, please make plans to attend BOLD 2007 in Maui!

Watch a video clip of Robin in Maui demonstrating some birth sounds and reading a line or two from the play! Thanks to Zen Amen for shooting this footage!
